Countdown to the Year Zero
March 17, 1970 -- Mr. Lon is weeping. Even though he has been appointed as the head of the new government, his junta associates are pointing a gun at his head. Lon Nol has always been a dedicated royalist, and fears what will become of the country if the king is deposed. Other members of the junta, however, fear that if Sihanouk remains king, he will sooner or later see that they are purged. Besides, the American advisors have made it clear that no Americn aid shall be forthcoming until Sihanouk is out of the way.
Under duress and with protest, Lon Nol finally signs the executive order.
To this day, Sihanouk, who had tried to keep Cambodia out of the ¨Second Indochina War,¨ insists that this coup was planned by the CIA. The American advisors neglected to let Mr. Lon know that American support for this war was rapidly evaporating.
It is likely that top officials in the Nixon administration believed that by expanding the war into Cambodia, they could force the American people to support the war effort. In fact, the American meddling in the Cambodian government and subsequent American military operations set forces in motion which led directly to the tragedy of the Year Zero.
